The Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for SMEs (VSME) is a simplified framework for non-listed small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to standardize sustainability reporting, align with stakeholders, and access green financing. It is designed for SMEs not subject to CSRD, but that still needs to respond to supply chain or investor demands.
The VSME has a two-tiered structure. The basic module covers 11 essential disclosures across environmental, social, and governance (ESG) areas, focusing on high-level metrics such as GHG Scope 1 and 2 emissions, workforce statistics, and corruption/bribery incidents. The comprehensive module adds seven advanced disclosures for detailed stakeholder data requests, such as GHG reduction targets, human rights policies, and climate risk assessments. A potential third module may align with EU taxonomy in the future.
The scope of VSME is less extensive and less demanding than ESRS. For example, you do not need to report on Scope 3 emissions in the basic module. The standard explicitly uses an “if applicable” principle, which ensures that only disclosures relevant to a business’s specific operations or circumstances need to be reported, allowing companies to exclude certain disclosures that do not apply to them.
The VSME streamlines data requests, reducing reporting complexity while still providing a strong baseline of ESG data to inform strategic business decisions. Aligning with the VSME can help smaller companies that do not need to comply with CSRD strengthen relationships with stakeholders in larger companies and investors and provide insights into ESG performance. VSME data is also used to improve operational efficiency and enhance business resilience.
