Scatec ASA’s commitment to rigorous human rights processes

We sat down with Isil Onan, Director of E&S Advisory and Jeanette Pretorius, Senior Vice President of Supply Chain at Scatec to delve into their Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) approach, sustainability efforts, and how Position Green has helped evaluate human rights concerns to enable better business’ practices.

Scatec, a leader in renewable energy solutions, considers human rights due diligence (HRDD) as one of the top priority sustainability topics. With operations spanning four continents, Scatec’s commitment to HRDD is integral to its ethos, ensuring that as they expand clean energy access in emerging markets, they do so responsibly and ethically. Through rigorous assessments and strategic investments, Scatec not only drives growth but also prioritises the protection of human rights across its supply chain and operations. By upholding HRDD standards validated by international frameworks, Scatec aims to foster positive social impacts, promote fair labour practices, and empower communities, thereby advancing its mission of improving the future while safeguarding human dignity and rights.

What key needs did you identify in choosing Position Green?

The enactment of the Norwegian Transparency Act prompted us to reevaluate our processes, ensuring our readiness to fulfil the obligations the law imposes on companies like ours. In selecting Position Green, we recognized the paramount importance of aligning our business with sustainability practices. Sustainability is integral to our operations, and our commitment to adhering to the highest international standards for managing social, environmental, and human rights risks is non-negotiable.

In what way has Position Green helped you comply with regulatory HRDD requirements to ensure responsible supply chain management?

Our dedication to upholding the highest standards in Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) is unwavering. Collaborating with Position Green allowed us to conduct a thorough examination of our processes and procedures, benchmarking them against industry best practices. Position Green played a pivotal role in improving the connection across the sustainability, compliance, and supply chain teams, ensuring alignment and compliance with regulatory HRDD requirements.

What has this process looked like?

Position Green conducted a comprehensive review of our documented processes and procedures, gaining a holistic understanding of our HRDD approach. Following the OECD framework, the assessment of salient risks enabled us to identify new risks in our business. Position Green provided insights on addressing these risks within our existing processes and suggested improvements, strengthening our commitment to responsible supply chain management.

In what way does Position Green help you make sustainability measurable and actionable?

Position Green employs a saliency assessment methodology, reviewing scale, scope, remediability, and likelihood of risks across our geographic operations and value chain. This approach establishes a robust structure for our risk assessments, making sustainability measurable and actionable. By systematically evaluating risks associated with our operations and supply chain, we are enabled to proactively address challenges and enhance the effectiveness of our sustainability initiatives.

What are your next steps in this area going forward?

As an international company operating in an industry with intricate supply chains and project activities in high human rights risk countries, ongoing review and improvement of our approach are imperative. We will persist in setting and reviewing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to track the efficacy of our HRDD actions.
